Opinions wanted...

So as most of you know I'm running the 6 day Transrockies Trail race at the end of August with my brother as my partner. On June 6th there is the Scorched Sole Ultra taking place in Kelowna. My brother lives in Vernon which is only about a half hour from Kelowna so it's kind of perfect for us to help us with our training! There is a 25km, a 50km, and a 50mi and while I had originally planned on doing the 25km, my brother informs me this week that he's doing the 50km!

That got me thinking that I want to do the 50km too! I've never done a 50km and I think it would be fun. I'm just wondering if that distance is maybe a bit much for me after just finishing a marathon and feeling how I do right now? I don't really know how much recovery time you're supposed to have after running a marathon. I do know that this wouldn't exactly be a race for me as i'm just new to the trailrunning thing so I'd just be taking it pretty easy and using it as a training run.

Hmm....just not sure what to do. What do you guys think? It would be my first 50km which makes me pretty excited! Anyhow, i'm not going to do anything rash and sign up for it just yet but i've definitely got some thinking to do!

Tonight i'm having a party which I'm pretty excited about. I haven't drank in a very long time so it's going to be good but it'll possibly be a rough day tomorrow depending on what i drink and how much! I just can't decide what i'm in the mood for...i'm loving the idea of some good beer right now but i'm still unsure! It's also going to be a nice payback to my crappy neighbors for their brutal party last friday night before I left town. Yeah!

And yes I know, i'm slack with my Boston race report, trust me it's coming soon!

Have a great weekend everybody!

  1. There is plenty of time for you to recover between now and the 50k, so as long as you feel good, I say go for it! You have a nice, big base so you won't have to build much mileage for it.

I didn't realize you were running the Transrockies stage race. That's awesome! I can't wait to hear more about it. Good luck with your training.

  2. Ditto, recover well in the next 3-4 weeks and then just a small build for the 50k. You'll be fine. Pfitzinger has some nice quick build programs for back to back marathons like that. Personally Guinness is my favorite. Have a fun party!

  3. Hey, congrats on your awesome Boston run and PB! That is an amazing time!

You sound like you would be suited to the 50km race if you were getting faster throughout the marathon. if your recovery goes well and you are feeling good, go for it!

Have fun at the party tonight!

  4. Honestly the timing works out great...throw your name in, I'm betting you'll be amazed at how much easier on the body a 50k trail race is verses a road marathon!
Party it up, Guinness is most certainly the best post race beer:)

  5. You should be OK if you take some recovery time.I once ran 3 marathons in 6 weeks,Although I ran well at the last one,I was cooked & glad that it was my last race of the season!

  6. You are in great shape, just reading from your Boston time, so I would think it's ok for you to run the 50KM with the recovery time that you have. For me personally it would be no no.

  7. Go for it. You'll be surprised! It will be the perfect training run/walk for the 2 of you and a good opportunity to work out the dynamics of running with a partner! Just don't go and beat yourself up. Take it easy. Walk the hills. Eat. Drink. Take some photos. Enjoy. The only modification in training? Make sure you get some time in on the trails to get your "trail legs" and some dexterity, it's waaaaay different than the road. The upside of the trail: you can go further and recover faster!

  8. A good guide is to allow one day of recovery for every mile raced before running hard/racing again. That allows you lots of time to recover and get some training runs in before the 50k. This guideline holds up to the marathon distance, with ultras and stage races I am still experimenting with how much recovery you need. Sounds like we have quite the Alberta contingent heading down to TransRockies - might be fun to get everyone together before the event for a fun run/trail run and brunch.
